Sunrise 2027, plainly
A voluntary GS1 milestone for retailers' scanners — not a law, and not the FDA.
Sunrise 2027 (GS1's "Ambition 2027") is the industry goal that retail point-of-sale systems should be able to scan 2D barcodes (QR codes with GS1 Digital Link, GS1 DataMatrix) by the end of 2027. It is voluntary and set by GS1, not legislation, and it does not remove the 1D barcode: brands keep printing the linear barcode until scanners are overwhelmingly 2D-capable.
Real, dated obligations exist elsewhere: EU wine e-labels (in force since December 2023), the EU battery passport (February 2027), SAHPRA's GS1 DataMatrix requirement on imported medicines in South Africa (October 2027), and EU Digital Product Passports from 2027 onward. PaqLink builds on the same GS1 Digital Link foundation so one code can serve all of them.
